Have you ever purchased a vehicle and have gone to roll up or down the window and it falls to one side? Not only is this aggravating, but the question comes to mind how do I fix my crooked car window?
You need to take the door panel off of the door that has the crooked car window. A window goes crooked due to a bushing or part failing inside of the door. When the part or bushing fails or breaks, it cannot hold the window in place anymore. When this happens, the window falls to one side, unable to raise or lower properly.
Not only is this situation aggravating but if you do not know how to fix it, this repair can cost you money that you didn’t budget for that month. So let’s look deeper into this and see how you can fix this without requiring a lot of money.
Why is my car window crooked?
Your car window is crooked due to the window itself coming off of the window track. Inside your door, you have a sheet of glass that is kept on a track system. At the bottom of this track system is usually a couple of rubber bump stops that hold your window onto this window track.
If those rubber bump stops become damaged or deteriorated, then they are unable to do their job. If the rubber bump stops cannot do their job of holding the window in the track, then the window will fall. When it falls, you will see your window become crooked and unable to move up and down.
How do I fix my crooked car window?
First, you will need to take the door panel off to see what is going on with the door under the cover. The door panel is held on by an assortment of screws on the outside perimeter of the door.
Also, do not forget about the last couple of screws near the door handle on your door panel. Do not tug or pull the panel very hard, and you can break something if you pull too hard.
Also, once you get the door panel free if you have power windows and power locks, you will need to unplug the harness that is plugged in on the backside of the door panel.
In the situation that you do not have power windows, you will need to take off the window crank handle which should be easily removed with a small pry bar, flat head screwdriver, or interior handle removal tool.
Once you have all of this free, you will be able to get the door panel completely out of your way, so you are not confined to a small space to work.
There will be a metal plate in your way to see a clear view of the window itself. But if you look through the big holes that are placed in this metal for this particular reason.
These holes will give you a clear view of the parts you will need to replace. A crooked window is pretty straightforward; you will be able to notice rather quickly which sections are broken and need to be replaced.
What parts do I need to fix the window?
When it comes to fixing a crooked window, you have a few parts that are vital to this operation. You have your front window run, rear window run, regulator, rubber nuts, and window motor.
If your window is now crooked and will not come back up, it is due to the glass coming out of the track. You will hear your window motor turn on and try to move the window, but it does not move anywhere.
This means your regulator and window motor are still good, so that is not your problem. Look into the door, and in many cases, you will see that the glass has lost one of the rubber nuts that hold the glass onto the window track.
You can go to your local auto parts store to find a replacement part or go online and find one. They are easily accessible to purchase, but when it comes to the install, it takes a little flexibility.
How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
There is no way to prevent this from happening in the future, sadly. These parts become loose and broken the longer you own your vehicle. The window bushings are categorized as normal wear and tear for cars and are a pretty easy fix.
